Clear aligner treatment and whitening can be planned together, but the order matters. Composite attachments bonded to the teeth and fillings do not whiten, and the area under an attachment does not come into contact with the gel. That is why whitening is usually done after the attachments are removed. Treatment aligners are used as whitening trays only if the dentist recommends it.
Can teeth be whitened during clear aligner treatment?
In some cases it can, but in most plans whitening is left until the end of treatment. The dentist decides based on the number and position of attachments, gum health and sensitivity.
The aim of clear aligner treatment is to move the teeth; whitening only changes their colour. The two procedures do not directly interfere with each other, but when done at the same time there are points to watch regarding colour balance and comfort. As orthodontic treatment is also provided at our clinic, aligner treatment and whitening can be handled within a single plan.
How do attachments affect whitening?
Attachments are small composite bumps bonded to the tooth surface so the aligner can grip the tooth better, and they do not change colour with whitening. This has two effects:
- The attachment itself: As the surrounding tooth whitens, the attachment may look darker.
- Under the attachment: The enamel covered by the attachment does not come into contact with the gel. When the attachment is removed, this small area may remain a different shade from its surroundings.
Attachments are removed at the end of treatment and the surface is polished. That is why whitening after the attachments have been removed usually gives a more even colour.
When should whitening be done: before, during or after?
The most common order is to whiten after clear aligner treatment has finished and the attachments have been removed. The other options can also be considered depending on the person.
| Timing | Advantage | Point to note |
|---|---|---|
| Before treatment | The colour of the attachments can be matched to the new tooth shade | The colour may return somewhat during treatment |
| During treatment | The process may be shorter | A shade difference may remain under attachments; only if the dentist recommends it |
| After treatment | The colour is more even because the attachments have been removed | Planned together with the retainer stage |
Which order suits you is decided at the examination. If there are fillings or veneers on the front teeth, these are also included in the plan.

Can a treatment aligner be used as a whitening tray?
Treatment aligners are used as whitening trays only if the dentist recommends it and in the way they specify. Putting gel in your aligner on your own is not recommended.
There are several reasons for this:
- Treatment aligners are designed to move the teeth; the gel may not spread evenly over every tooth.
- Excess gel can overflow from the edge of the aligner and irritate the gums.
- Over-the-counter products contain no more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide; higher-strength products are only supplied through a dentist.
If considered necessary, a custom-made whitening tray is prepared after treatment ends. We explain this method on our page at-home teeth whitening.

How can you protect tooth colour during aligner treatment?
Drinking a coloured drink while wearing a clear aligner means the liquid stays between the aligner and the tooth for a long time. This makes it easier for both the teeth and the aligner to stain, and with sugary drinks it also increases the risk of decay.
- Drink only plain water while wearing your aligner.
- Take the aligner out when eating and for drinks such as tea and coffee.
- Brush your teeth, or at least rinse your mouth with water, before putting the aligner back in.
- If you smoke, do not smoke while wearing the aligner.
We explain the habits that cause staining in detail on our page smoking, tea and coffee stains.
How are clear aligners cleaned?
Cleaning the aligners every day with a soft brush and lukewarm or cold water is enough. A clean aligner holds fewer stains and also helps prevent bad breath.
- Do not use hot water; the aligner may lose its shape.
- Do not brush the aligner with abrasive or whitening toothpaste; its surface may become scratched and dull.
- Keep the aligner in its case when you take it out.
- Aligner cleaning tablets can be used if your dentist recommends them.
How is whitening planned after treatment ends?
After the attachments are removed, the surfaces are cleaned and polished. The whitening method is then chosen after assessing tooth colour, gums and sensitivity.
- Removal of the attachments and polishing of the surface
- A scale and polish if needed
- Measuring the shade and setting the target shade
- Whitening with an in-office, at-home or combined method
- If needed, replacing fillings on the front teeth to match the new shade
An in-office session takes about 45–90 minutes; at-home whitening usually continues for 1–3 weeks. Sensitivity after whitening usually passes within 24–72 hours. For people treated with fixed braces, the process is described on our page teeth whitening after braces.
What should you look out for during the retainer stage?
After clear aligner treatment, a retainer is used so the teeth keep their new position. During this stage too, it is advisable not to drink coloured drinks while wearing the retainer.
Whitening can be planned together with the retainer stage. Your dentist decides whether the retainer can be used for whitening. At our clinic in Oran, Çankaya, we can also discuss your colour expectations at your post-treatment check-ups.
Do aligner treatment and whitening increase sensitivity?
Both procedures can cause temporary sensitivity in some people. When switching to a new aligner, it is common to feel pressure and slight aching in the teeth in the first days; whitening can cause brief twinges with cold and heat.
So that these two effects do not overlap, whitening is usually not scheduled for the days when you switch to a new aligner. For people who already have sensitivity, the dentist may recommend a lower-concentration gel, a shorter application time or desensitising products.
- You can start using a desensitising toothpaste a few days before whitening.
- Avoid very cold and very hot food and drinks for a few days.
- If twinges last longer than a few days, contact your dentist.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use whitening gel with my clear aligners?
Only if your dentist recommends it and in the way they specify. Putting gel in your treatment aligner on your own is not recommended.
Do attachments whiten?
No. Attachments are made of composite material and do not change colour with whitening. They are removed at the end of treatment and the surface is polished.
Can I drink coffee while wearing clear aligners?
It is not recommended. Coffee can stay between the aligner and the tooth and stain both. It is better to take the aligner out to drink and then rinse your mouth.
Should I whiten my teeth before aligner treatment?
It is possible, but in most plans whitening is done after the attachments have been removed. Your dentist decides the order that suits you.
Do clear aligners turn yellow?
Drinking coloured drinks while wearing the aligner and inadequate cleaning can cause the aligner to pick up colour. Taking the aligner out before drinking anything other than water prevents this.
Do attachments leave marks on the teeth after removal?
After the attachments are removed, the surface is cleaned and polished. The small area under an attachment may look a slightly different shade from its surroundings; this difference is usually evened out by whitening after treatment.
